Jeanie left bundles of goodies at Ms. Reed’s door. She seems very kind.

It seemed that Ada and Nina weren’t the only ones thinking about Ms. Reed.

Nina came over in the afternoon.

“I stopped by the dog shelter yesterday,” said Nina, “just to see if Marguerite ended up there.”

“Good idea. Did you find anything?” said Ada.

“There’s an adorable little dog that looks almost exactly like Marguerite. I thought I had found her! But it was a boy,” said Nina.

“Oh. Oh well,” said Ada.

“He was really cute, though!” said Nina. “And there’s still Jack to consider.”

“Nina, Jack’s a good kid,” said Ada.

“But I know he had his eye on Marguerite! And maybe because he’s so little, he didn’t know any better,” said Nina.

“Hmm . . . ,” said Ada.

“I think we should look into it,” said Nina.

“Well,” said Ada, “I guess I’ll put him on the list of suspects.”

The next morning Elliott went on a tour of Alcatraz with Jack and his family. Ada helped Elliott tie his parrot on extra tight before he left.

“I’ll be back with the booty, or me name isn’t Bluebeard,” said Elliott.

Ada was a little jealous of Elliott. She had read about the historic escape from Alcatraz. In the 1960s, four prisoners at Alcatraz had planned an escape for months without anyone noticing. Using spoons, they widened the ducts in their cells. They set up a workshop on the roof to build boats and tools. They made decoy dummies of themselves out of soap and toilet paper. No one knew for sure what happened to the men, but many believed they made it to Mexico.

Even though they were criminals, Ada couldn’t help but admire them. Their plan had taken cleverness, determination, and discipline. But Ada also wondered why no one had noticed. The dummies were too poorly painted to look like real men. And the prisoners had stolen prison supplies. Maybe the guards were looking for the wrong things.

Ada suddenly realized that she was not so different from the guards. She had been watching the courtyard for days, and there was one person who had clearly been planning something. One person who was at work on something quite different from the rest of his neighbors. The clues had been there all along, and she had missed them.
