Chapter 10

Friday. Exam day. My palms were sweating badly. I dropped my hairbrush twice by accident while getting ready in the bathroom.

“Everything ok, kid?” Moony asked when I came into the kitchen. I knew that I had dark circles on my face.

“Yeah,” I said, rubbing my eyes. “Do we have any to-go coffee cups? I have exams today.”

In the kitchen, Moony had kindly prepared me the lunch that I requested. The way our system worked is that you filled out a form for him and placed it on the dining room table after dinner. There were actually several lunchboxes on the shiny metal kitchen counter. A whole stack of them! I wondered if the boys also requested some for their days. Most people had at least one exam today, from what I understood.

Priscilla warned me at the beginning that these regular exams were intense, but they weren’t even the worst of it. She said that the midterms and finals would be even worse. Great. I debated setting fire to the castle and trying to make it over the barrier wall before school.

“Exam time, huh?” Moony asked. He was sipping from his own cup of coffee; his mug was shaped to resemble a pig. A gift from his daughter, he’d told me. I nodded. He fetched a sleek thermos for me from a cabinet. “Here, take this. You can have it if you want.”

“Thank you,” I said, stifling a yawn. I took the thermos from him and grabbed my lunch for the day. He saw me looking at the other lunchboxes and smiled.

“Most of the boys order multiple on busy days. They eat a lot, you know. It’s a shifter thing. It’ll be you one day!” He winked. He was trying to make me feel better, but I didn’t need another reminder that I might not actually be a shifter. But I filed that away into my mental fact list of Council boys . Last night, I’d been so tired that I didn’t have the time to add to my private journal. After my exams, I promised myself. After a good night’s sleep.

I’d like to sleep for about 24 hours straight. Maybe two days and a half if I could swing it.

In the dining room, I found Dracus. He was sitting in his usual spot at the end of the table and scanning his newspaper. This one was in a language that I couldn’t make sense of. The alphabet was strange, consisting of various symbols. I passed by him to grab the coffee pot— pot was an understatement. Moony usually brewed two coffee carafes for us. Today was no exception. I filled mine up, adding milk and sugar to it.

“Fiona.”

I turned to see Dracus staring at me. “Yes?” I stirred my coffee with a spoon. It was odd for him to be torn away from his paper.

“Are you ready for your exams?”

I sighed. “As ready as I’ll ever be. I’ve spent a lot of time studying.”

He said nothing as he folded his hands onto the table.
