If all of this sounds simply too convenient, it is. Maccabee, with good reason, asked why a hoaxer would knowingly leave behind the very piece of evidence that would prove the hoax? And in a place where anyone could discover it, at that! If Walters had left the house vacant for a period of time, wouldn't he have returned to make sure he had taken all of his belongings, especially a vital prop that he had used to fake photographs? Even turned on its face, the discovery of the model simply makes no sense from an evidentiary point of view. What does make sense, however, is that someone planted the model. After all, an air conditioning company showed up — uninvited according to Walters — to perform some maintenance on an area of the house in which, some time later, a reporter without credentials easily finds a model that discredits Walters's photos. How coincidental is that?

Other people directly attacked Walters's credibility, too. A teenager and his parents claimed that the young man had helped Walters fake some of the photos. Walters's supporters argued that the parents were seeking notoriety themselves. Another critic claimed that Walters could have created the blue UFO beam in his photos by simply peeling back the print layer of the Polaroid image, thereby exposing the blue line of the coating underneath. But photo experts said that it would have been impossible to have achieved that level of precision on a single photo by peeling back the layer.
