Popular, charming, eager to please, and personable, Calvin has a calm exterior that exists in defiance of his upbringing, not because of it. A compassionate force in his own right, Calvin helps Meg and Charles Wallace in their search for their father not only out of admiration for them both but also because he has long dreamed of having a father like Dr. Murry instead of being raised under Darkness’s shadow.

The rumble of the garage door opening vibrated through the walls to where Calvin sat in the dining room. He lowered his head, hoping his dad was in a good mood from work, and squinted at the math workbook on the hardwood table in front of him. He was saving his favorite subject, English, for last as a reward; first, though, he was dutifully struggling through math homework.

Why couldn’t it be word problems? He was better at those. Assigning real-life objects and concepts like speed always seemed to make the numbers more tangible. But word problems had been left behind the year before, and eighth graders were expected to solve for an abstract like the letter X with no trouble.

A door slammed and the staccato clicking of leather-soled shoes approached down the hallway and paused in the entryway.

Calvin’s shoulders tensed.

Pasting on a smile, he looked up. “Hi, Dad. How was work?”

His father’s green eyes narrowed, the skin around them wrinkling in suspicion. His face was clean-shaven, and while his salt-and-pepper hair was styled in a casual wave, Calvin knew a cup of grease kept it stiffly in place.

“Productive, as it should be.” His father’s smooth voice filled the room, bouncing off the empty walls. It always surprised Calvin how melodic his father’s voice could be. If it matched his persona, it would be a gravelly bellow. Or piercing, like the sharpening of knives. “Not done with your schoolwork yet? What have you been doing all day?”

“I stayed late for that canned food drive I told you about,” Calvin said, pressing the eraser of the pencil into his bottom lip.

“Stop that. It’s a disgusting habit.” His father reached out and snagged the pencil from him, then tossed it onto the table.

It clattered and rolled before tipping over the edge and plummeting to the floor.

“I thought I told you not to waste your time with that.” Mr. O’Keefe crossed his arms, flattening his red tie against his chest. “Volunteer work only counts in high school, and you need to be the main organizer, not just the lowly help.”

Not expecting or needing an answer, his dad turned and strode into the kitchen. He dropped his keys into a bowl with a jangle. The fridge door opened and closed with a thump, and then there was the hiss of air escaping from a bottle.

Calvin’s father reappeared, sparkling water in hand. He glided around the table to the living room as Calvin shifted in his chair, wishing for the millionth time his parents would allow cushions. But no, that wouldn’t match the decor.

“I put in a call to Brent Lumbach today.
