Port Blair was formally established in 1789 as a British outpost, in honour of Archibald Blair, a naval surveyor of the East India Company. It was used extensively as a colony for exiled prisoners. Also known as Kaala Paani, the Cellular Jail located on the island housed numerous Indian freedom fighters in small, individual cells. Indigenous tribes have been living on these islands for thousands of years.
