Chapter Eighteen

We were having a sunset meeting in the hotel restaurant to figure out what our next steps were. And also because we had four perpetually hungry werewolves to feed.

I gulped down a glass of iced tonic while we sat there. I was going through tonic at an alarming rate, but it was barely controlling the vampire symptoms.

Rose frowned at me, but I ignored her.

She was keeping my secret, even though she clearly didn’t want to. But she hadn’t found an antidote and also struck out on contacting a witch who might have been able to help. The woman who had trained Rose was at a retreat on a remote island with no phones. And there was no known antidote. I wasn’t giving up, not yet, but I wanted to enjoy my life while I still had it.

Skyler’s phone rang. “It’s Gertie,” she said. “She had a doctor’s visit today and wants to FaceTime. I’m going out to the patio to take it.”

“I’ll go with you,” Connor said, but she shook her head.

“I’ll be fine.”

He frowned but stayed where he was.

She was smiling when she came back.

“How’s Gertie?” I asked.

“Not puking anymore,” Skyler replied. Skyler’s stepmom was expecting a baby.

“Did they find out if you’re going to be a big sister or a big brother?” Beckett asked, his eyes twinkling.

“You goofball,” Skyler said, rolling her eyes, but she was laughing, too. “It’s a surprise.”

“How did you convince your dad to let you skip school?” I asked. We’d been so focused on finding Mr. Sheridan that some of the details of a weeklong road trip had escaped me.

“He and Gertie just got back from a romantic getaway,” she said. “I’m not sure he even noticed I was gone.”

“They just left you alone in that big house?” Connor growled. He’d been out of the country when Skyler had been under Travis’s control, but since he found out what had happened while he was gone, he’d been super protective of her.

“It’s not like I can tell them that vampires really exist,” Skyler said.

“The first rule of the hidden world,” Vaughn said.

Skyler was the only human in our little group. I didn’t know what Rose and Thorn’s actual supernatural powers were, but both of them were kickass girls who worked for The Paranormal Activities Committee.

“Was your mom…” I trailed off, not sure of the polite way to ask my sisters if their mom had been a supe.

“Was she of the hidden world?” Thorn said. “Yes, she was a vampire hunter, too, which is why Rose is so handy with plants and why I’m a warrior.”

“But neither of you inherited Mason’s ability,” I said.

“We’re pretty sure that’s a dark arts thing,” Rose admitted. She shivered. “Besides, I have no interest in becoming a snake, even temporarily.”

Interesting. Both of my parents had dabbled in the dark arts. Maybe they had more in common than I’d previously thought.

“Have you ever seen him use his powers?”

Thorn and Rose exchanged a glance. “No.”

“But you know what he can do?” I persisted.
