CHAPTER 11

MUFFINS AND MANNERS

Finishing up the first muffins, Laura, David and Jakal waited for the story to begin. They waited…and waited…and…

“Nkough—shuuuuh. Nkough—shuuuuh.” Pops had fallen asleep. There he was, his mouth wide open, muffin crumbs scattered in his mustache, and snoring up a storm.

“Is he…I mean, he couldn’t be—” Laura clasped her hand across her mouth to stifle a giggle.

“I’m afraid he is,” answered Jakal, who was laughing so hard he boinged around like Jell-O. “I suppose at his age, sleep comes easily and uncontrollably. Pops does this to me every time, and every time I think it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.” Jakal laughed so hard that he was flipped upside down and holding his belly with his side fins.

“Umm, Mr. Pops?” David was much too eager to hear the story to be at all amused by Pops’s sudden nap. “Hey! Wake up! I mean, wake up please,” he rephrased, suddenly afraid when Pops’s eyes began to open and his snoring eased up.

“So sorry; my apologies,” Pops said. “A good nap always comes upon me after a tasty muffin.” He licked up the crumbs and gave his wings a good stretch. “Mmmm-oooh. That was a delicious little nap. So now, where was I?” Pops looked at Laura, David and Jakal for a prompt to where he left off the story.

“You never really started,” muttered David, who was trying to hold onto his last bit of patience (of which he had only a very little amount to begin with). “Sheesh!”

“I beg your pardon, young human cub,” said Pops.

“I mean, you hadn’t started the story yet, sir,” David replied, adding some manners to his impatience. He was starting to realize that being frustrated is okay sometimes, but forgetting our manners is never okay.

“Yes, you’re right. Have another muffin, David. Pick this one, it has a very special drippy surprise inside it.” Pops pointed out the muffin at the end of the third row. It was actually the ugliest muffin of the bunch, but David found himself looking very forward to scarfing it all up.

Pops came down to the table. He picked up a teacup with the grace and sophistication of a king – except, when you looked closely, you’d notice that it was his clawed thumb upon which the teacup sat. He closed his eye and took a sip.

“Ohhh. Mmmm. Oh! Okay! Where to start? Oh, yes.” Pops opened his beautiful green, sparkling eyes and looked at the three children, eagerly waiting, mouths nearly watering in expectation of a tasty story. (Why three children, you ask? Because, compared to Pops, Jakal was still a kid. Just how old was Pops, exactly? Just wait and hear the story.)

“As a little sea dragon, I knew that my fire burned hotter than all the others,” Pops began. “By the time my friends were able to heat up their stoves, I was already working in the bakery making hundreds of scrumptious things for hungry customers. And more importantly, I had very good control over the intensity of my fire and its direction.
