The camp is full of whispers this morning. The news of the missing fae in Doerallia and Arpathe is now common knowledge. Disturbingly, I heard some gossip regarding disappearances in Forlin, the land of the hare-like fae which borders Doerallia. Whatever is causing these fae to vanish is moving. Will it keep spreading across the whole of the fae lands? I still don’t know where the rebels’ base is situated, a piece of knowledge that’s not been shared with me. However, if the other factions haven’t been spared, it makes sense that we will be affected eventually too.

These thoughts stay with me as I eat my porridge with Caldor. We’ve fallen into a routine now. Caldor meets me for breakfast and then takes me to the gym where I train with Gideon and Orin until lunch. After eating with my winged friend once more, he walks with me to Emil’s hut, where I practice controlling my power. I’ve been here for almost two weeks now, and although the progress in my training is slow going, I have been making progress. I assumed my self-defence training would take the longest, but I’m actually coming along faster than expected, at least compared to my training with Emil.

When I finally emerged from my room the day after my freak-out in the gym, I felt lighter than I had for the first time in months. I slept the whole afternoon and night, barely moving the entire time. I still can’t believe I slept for so long, but I must have needed it, because I felt restored. I was nervous about what Gideon would say when I saw him for training the following day, but neither he nor Orin mentioned it. I have noticed Gideon is more careful with his holds as we practice though, something I’m grateful for.

My training with Emil, however? Not so good. We spend hours sitting cross-legged in his hut as I try to reach for my power, attempting to coax a small amount and do my bidding. Unfortunately, the only time I can access it now is when I’m threatened, otherwise it just feels like it’s blocked off from me. Emil tells me this block is self-made and all due to my fear of it. He may be right, but that doesn’t help me keep it controlled. I’m also apparently still leaking power, which is a constant frustration to me.

“Annalise?” Caldor calls, and from his amused expression, I’m guessing this isn’t the first time he’s said my name. Grimacing, I shoot him an apologetic look, but I can tell he isn’t mad at me.

“Sorry, I was miles away. Did you say something?” Reaching for my water, I take a sip, watching him over my glass.

“I was asking if you’re okay to go to the gym by yourself this morning.”

I almost choke on my drink. Slamming it down on the table harder than necessary, I clear my throat as I attempt to recover.

I’m perfectly capable of walking there by myself, but I always enjoy my time with Caldor.
