Kate had taken a chance on heading to the only residential park she knew of that was not too far from Rugeley. Nevertheless, she wasn’t very optimistic about her choice. It didn’t seem to her the sort of place somebody would choose to hide. For one thing, it was a semi-retirement park for people aged over fifty; it was close to the busy main road that ran from Stafford to Lichfield, and it was opposite the Trent and Mersey Canal, where several narrowboats were moored. It wasn’t a place where Tommy could easily blend in and vanish, even if he spent most of his time indoors. Somebody from the syndicate would easily have tracked him here and finished him off. This didn’t seem like a clever move.

‘Maybe that was exactly his thought process,’ said William’s voice. ‘He could be hiding in plain sight. The syndicate might not even have considered this place. Like you, they’ll have pegged it for a lousy hiding place. They would imagine Tommy to be shrewder, that if he is living in a static home, then he’d have chosen one in a remote location, or at least somewhere very difficult to find. Check out this place and have a word with the publicans. There’s every chance he’ll have visited one or both nearby pubs. If he is or was here, there’s no way he’d have sat inside day after day. He’d be feeling confident enough to get out and about. Try it at least. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. It’s surely worth investigating.’

It was enough for her to pull off the road on to the tarmacadam that allowed her to drive around the site, getting a feel for which properties were occupied and which weren’t. As she drove, it soon became obvious that this was an extensive plot, housing approximately one hundred and fifty static homes of all descriptions and sizes. Passing place after place, she got the feeling she was being observed by curtain twitchers. These residents were very curious. Maybe Tommy had chosen to come here after all.

The hardest decision was working out which door to bang on first. She could really do with her old team doing this legwork. It would take forever to get around all the houses and even then, she couldn’t guarantee anyone would tell her anything useful.

‘Got to start somewhere, Kate,’ said William. ‘Head to the far end and work your way back to the road in a clockwise direction. If I were hiding, I’d choose a home that had a good view of anyone approaching.’

Once again, hearing his instructions gave her the motivation she needed. She pulled up in front of the shabbiest home and got out. The resident who answered the doorbell took one look at her and told her to shove off, telling her that cold callers weren’t allowed on site.

‘Policing is all about tenacity and footwork, Kate. I always taught you that. It can be laborious and often unrewarding. Still, it must be done. Try next door.
