CHAPTER SIX
Fortunately it was nearly the end of her shift. 'I'm still working,' she said to John. 'Stay there until I come to get you. I'll be about ten minutes.'
'Take all the time you like, sweetheart,' John said urbanely. 'I'll just sit here and drink coffee.'
'And don't call me... Oh, why do I bother?'
There was a definite protocol at the end of the shift. She made sure all her notes and observations were filed in the correct place then walked along for handover to make sure that the relieving nurse knew what problems they had.
When she had finished she wondered what to do. She had intended to call on Jo for a whileâbut no way would she take John up to see her sister. For a moment she even considered just disappearing through a back exit, but she knew it would do no good. John was dogged; he would find her and cause no end of trouble while he was looking. She went back to Reception.
There were always taxis outside the A and E Department. Kate beckoned one, told John to load his baggage and climbed in with him. It seemed as if half the hospital came out to watch them drive away.
'What's this nonsense about you being my fiancé? Don't you know what hospitals are? It'll be all over the place in five minutes.'
John looked hurt. 'Well, we are good friends, and since you've been away I've had time to think. I'm sure you have too. I think that we've got something going, Kate, and we've both got to work at it.'
It was so frustrating. 'We've talked about this before. Didn't I make myself clear? I said we were friends, no more.'
'That was then. I was sure you were getting to feel the same way as I do. After talking to you yesterday I realised you were really upset. I had a little time owing, so I came over at once. To help you. Aren't you pleased to see me?'
Not for the first time, she wondered which planet John had arrived from. 'Well, it's nice that you can think of me. But honestly, John, there's no future for us.'
For the first time John looked a little confused, a little crestfallen. 'I didn't think you'd act this way,' he said.
Kate sighed. 'Well, I am acting this way. Now, where are you going to stay?'
'Can't I stay with you? I know you've got a house, and I thought...'
'You're not staying in the house. Not a chance! I'll find you a good hotel.' She leaned forward and directed the taxi driver to the Royal Lancaster. She knew it was the bestâand most expensiveâhotel in Kirkhelen. But John was a surgeon; he could easily afford it. And he'd be comfortable there.
In fact there was a suite vacant, and John thought it would be fine. The plumbing was up to standard, there was a good view of the church from the front window, and there was twenty-four-hour room service.
'We are a little bit civilised in this country,' she told him.
