This chapter is concerned with the first Rydberg ion experiments carried out in our laboratory. We use a two-photon excitation scheme, which differs notably from the single-photon excitation scheme used in the experiment in Mainz, described in Sect. 1.3.2. The two-photon excitation scheme allows for a lower light-induced coupling between internal and external degrees of freedom compared with the single-photon excitation scheme (Sect. 4.3). This allows us to observe narrower Rydberg resonances than the Mainz experiment and to resolve resonance structure.

The experimental techniques developed in this chapter allow us to investigate Rydberg ion-trap effects (Chap. 6) and to coherently control Rydberg ions (Chap. 7).
