They stopped in front of the store. Wallace got a bad feeling. Heâd told his mom heâd come right home. He was two hours late. What if she found out? He was still grounded from before.
âSo how hard was it to steal stuff?â Jordan asked.
âEasy if itâs small,â Wallace bluffed. âJust remove the tags. Then stick it in a bag. Itâs the cars that are a big deal.â
âCan you hot-wire a car too?â Deron asked. He was impressed.
âSure I can.â Wallace couldnât. His best friend did that. His friend who was in juvie now. âBut letâs check out those kicks first.â
They got out of the car. Emmitt grabbed a bag from the backseat. They went into the store.
The clerk glared at them. âWeâre closing soon. Not like youâll buy anything,â he sneered. He eyed Emmittâs bag suspiciously.
Wallace was annoyed. Theyâd just walked into the store! They werenât doing anything. What was this guyâs problem?
Jordan and Emmitt ignored the clerk. They cracked jokes. They started throwing shoes like footballs. Wallace walked the other way.
Deron was in heaven. âAw, man. Do you see these?â He held up a shoe with bright orange laces. âIâve wanted these more than anything.â He pulled a picture from his pocket. It was an ad for the shoes.
âSo buy âem,â Wallace suggested.
Deron looked at his ratty trainers. âGot no cash. All my money goes into that clunker.â He pointed to his beat-up car.
âIf youâve âgot no cash,â I suggest you get outta here. I will call the police on your asses.â The clerk had snuck up behind them.
âWe done nothing wrong,â Wallace said.
âYeah. But what about them?â He jerked his thumb at Jordan and Emmitt. âYou got five minutes before I call the cops. And who you think theyâll believe? Me? Or a bunch of rowdy boys?â He walked away.
âWhat a jerk,â Deron said. He shook his head.
âWe werenât doing nothing!â Wallace was angry.
âItâs always like this with those two.â Deron looked at Emmitt and Jordan.
âWhy do you hang with them?â Wallace asked. He couldnât figure it out. Deron was cool. He didnât need those guys.
âTheyâre friends of Willâs. He asked me to watch out for them. He canât while heâs locked up.â Deron looked upset. âHavenât done a good job.â He started toward Emmitt and Jordan.
âWait.â Wallace grabbed his arm. âIâve got a friend in juvie too. You donât need their trash. Let âem go, man.â
âCanât,â Deron answered.
Wallace shrugged. Then he grinned. âI got an idea.â
He looked around. He saw that the clerk was busy. Then he got to work.
