No one spoke on the drive back to Haghill, not feeling secure until they were back on their own territory. The Blood Brothers had been waiting outside the house in Gallowburn in their own car for them to emerge and had followed them until they’d left the scheme.

‘Well, that was a revelation,’ said Eddie as they gathered around the kitchen table.

‘It feels like she’s still touching my leg,’ shivered Harry.

‘From where I was sitting, you looked to be enjoying it,’ retorted Dean.

‘What do you all think?’ Eddie asked the table.

‘I think we’ve no choice but to do as Toni asks,’ said Jane.

‘Me too,’ replied Carly.

‘But if we do agree, we’ll always be beholden to her,’ said Dean. ‘There’ll be no way out for us.’

‘The same thing could be said for Rod,’ replied Harry.

‘It would be easier to escape working for Rod than Toni. Once you’re in with her, you’re in for life, like the Blood Brothers.’

‘They seem to be doing pretty well to me.’

‘At what cost?’

‘If we don’t do what she wants, Dean,’ said Eddie, ‘she will kill us.’

He sighed. ‘I know.’

‘I quite like her,’ said Carly. ‘She’s clever and has more courage than most men.’

‘She’s also psychotic and enjoys torturing and killing people,’ replied Dean coolly.

Carly shrugged. ‘At least I don’t have to worry about her hitting on me like I do with Rod.’

‘But we’ll have to worry about it,’ said Harry, gesturing from himself to his brother.

‘That’ll make a refreshing change,’ she smirked.

‘The point is we’ve no choice,’ said Jane. ‘You never know, it could work out well for us. Say what you like about Toni, but she does have the reputation for being a good employer.’

‘You mean she gi’es you a decent pension and plenty of holidays each year?’ said Harry sarcastically.

‘If I had to choose between Toni and Rod, which I do,’ said Carly, ‘I’d choose Toni. It’s good having some background on Hairy Bill too. It’ll help me understand him better.’

‘Aye,’ said Harry. ‘Knowing he’s the son of a polis-battering stripper and an armed robber will be a big help.’

‘At least I’m offering Toni something more useful than my thighs,’ she retorted, making Jane chuckle.

Eddie slammed his fist down on the table.

‘Shut it, the lot of you,’ he yelled. ‘Have you any idea how serious this is? No’ to mention all the money we could lose. How will we pay for Alec’s care then?’

‘Toni said she’d pay for the next five years,’ replied Carly.

‘You’ve got more faith in Toni’s word than I have,’ he snapped. ‘Sorry,’ he added when she frowned at him. ‘I just hate it that we’ve been pushed into this.’

‘It’s Rod’s fault. He’s the one who decided to challenge Toni.’

‘We’ve only her word for that. This may come as a wee shock, but she has been known to tell fibs,’ he said sarcastically.

‘How do we find out what’s really going on then?’ Jane asked him.

‘Nae idea,’ he sighed. ‘But we’ll spy for her as she wants and hopefully we’ll find out something to point us in the right direction.
