Chapter 7
I waited outside for Tessaâs Jeep. Not far away, a thunderstorm rippled with lightning and thunder. I hoped we could beat the storm. The wind riffled through my hair. My leg didnât itch quite so much, so I didnât scratch. That was the old wivesâ advice. Donât scratch. That would only make things worse. Of course, if those old wives had had a good spell, they wouldnât have bothered with bad advice. I felt tired. The lack of sleep was telling, but it wasnât just the sleep. I didnât feel as magical as usual, if that was the way to describe it. Witches were like people. Their magical powers waxed and waned, and they could tell the difference. My powers were waning, and I didnât know why. I wasnât worried. They would soon power up again. That was the way of the world.
The Jeep raced up and skidded to a stop. While I shared Tessaâs concern for the girls, speeding dangerously didnât seem like a good solution.
âItâs night, and it will soon storm,â I said I as climbed into the Jeep. âSpeeding wonât save us that much time, and it could make matters worse.â
âWhen did you become my mother?â Tessa asked. âBut youâre right. We wonât speed recklessly. Weâll just speed.â
With that, the Jeep leaped forward, and I quickly clicked my safety belt. âWhat is the problem?â I asked.
âIâm not sure,â Tessa answered. âThe girls went out to talk to the Otter King. It seems he has some rather unique views on vampires and witches. I wonât go into them, but letâs say, he likes witches better than vampires.â
âWho doesnât?â
âExactly. Anyway, something happened, and they got scared.â
âWasnât the Otter King there to protect them?â
âHe was, but he doesnât fit in Geneviveâs car. Without him, they didnât want to try it.â
âThey couldnât call before midnight?â
Tessa laughed. âI have the feeling they had something secret to do. Allie told me she was staying with Genevive, and Iâm guessing Genevive told her father that she was staying with us. You know, the old Iâll-call-your-mom-if-you-call-mine.â
âI could just choke them,â I said. âAnd you know I donât mean that. Itâs just that I feel very tired, and I need sleep.â
âMe too. I canât get my brain past the equinox. We have a command performance, and I donât feel all that magical. Too much worry, I suppose.â
âStress,â I said. âIf the stupid stressweed comes back, Iâm going to pull out my hair.â
âWhich really shows a lack of stress,â Tessa teased.
We laughed together, a proven stress reliever.
We found the girls at the edge of the lake, the Otter King a few feet away. One look at us, and they both started talking at once. I let Tessa stop them, as I didnât have the energy.
âOkay,â Tessa said and held up her hand. âWho wants to go first? Because I canât listen to both of you at the same time.â
They looked at each other.
âIâll go,â Genevive said. âIt was my idea to come out here and talk to the Otter King.
