Individual priests might not have performed these functions very well – and they were operating with a set of ideas about the will of God or the importance of heaven that many of us would now find it hard to believe in. But for a long time, and for many people, they did provide some consolation for, and help with, the trials of existence. At critical junctures in a life, one called for the priest long before one asked for the doctor.

With the decline of religion, priests have largely disappeared from the landscape. But the need for the priestly functions that these people carried out for so long have not disappeared: we still require people to help us understand the strange events of our lives, to help us acknowledge our own brokenness, to encourage us to be kinder, more open and more forgiving around others, to advise us around difficult problems, to engage with our grief and to help us find transcendence.
