Emma was already sitting in the diner when they showed up. Gideon and Erik took the two spare seats opposite her. Emma opened her mouth to speak but instead gave a huge yawn.

“I had trouble sleeping last night. I kept thinking about those missing women... I can’t believe that now they’re both dead.”

Erik seemed to take her at face value, but Gideon noticed Emma dip her eyes slightly. A small but clear marker that she wasn’t being entirely honest with them. Not that it was his business what had kept Emma awake the night before. Maybe she had a new boyfriend, but Gideon’s gut told him it was something that she didn’t want him or Erik to know. What he did think was that Emma wasn’t someone who’d spend all night worrying that someone was coming for her. He might be wrong, but he got the impression that Emma was more than capable of taking care of herself.

This was confirmed when Erik told her that he was glad she was finally taking the risk seriously. A flicker of annoyance passed across her face before she gave Erik a brisk nod.

Erik, still oblivious to the micro expressions that Gideon had picked up on, continued with his update.

“Well, as you know, we spoke to Pete again earlier, and the doc made some interesting observations. We can’t scrub him off the list as a suspect, especially as he meets a lot of the other profile factors we’re taking into account.”

Using his fingers to tick off each one, he listed them: “He lives in a rural location where he could hide the women for the time they’re missing. We’ve got negative contact with at least one victim, a link to him being in the area of a cat mutilation, and he’s waving so many red flags for me, I think I’m drowning in them.”

Gideon picked up on Emma shooting him a quick glance as though reading his thoughts on the Pete interview. What was especially interesting was the apparent understanding on her face that she’d read his feelings on the matter as easily as he’d been reading her earlier.

Noticing that he was staring at her, Emma gave another overly loud yawn. “Right, guys. I think I’ll head home and try and catch up on some sleep.”

Gideon watched her leave the diner and couldn’t help but wonder if he’d ever work her out.
