Captain Perry after his victory at the Battle of Lake Erie

BRITISH INVASION

France surrendered to Britain and its allies in April 1814. With the conflict in Europe ended, Britain could pay more attention to its war with the United States. In July British troops invaded Maine. The same month, British and American troops fought the Battle of Lundy’s Lane near the border of Canada and New York. About 1,700 soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured in the bloody battle. Both sides claimed they won. According to American officer Lieutenant F.A. Sawyer, “the enemy’s bugle sounded the retreat for the last time, and our troops were left in undisturbed possession of the heights.” On the other hand, U.S. troops advanced no farther. That battle marked the end of American plans to invade Canada.
