A couple of hours later Jasper and Elspeth were strolling up the street towards Jasper's flat. There were a couple of cars parked in the road but they belonged to other residents. As they drew close to the flat Jasper slowed their pace. There weren't any signs of anyone hanging about that shouldn't be there, there wasn't anyone at all; the street was empty. Quickly they trotted up the short flight of steps to the front door of the building, luckily he still had the keys to the building. Once inside the foyer Jasper gave the street a quick scan; still nothing suspicious.
Relaxing a little, Jasper led the way up to his flat. Before inserting the front door key he looked closely to see if there were any signs of scratches or any other small indications that someone may have picked the lock in his absence, but all the scratches were familiar old ones, mainly of his own making when he had returned from a night out on the tiles and couldn't remember where his keys had been left.
The cool familiarity of his home pushed some of the tension out of his shoulders as he wandered slowly down the short corridor and pushed the door to the lounge open, Elspeth bustled up behind him.
âShall I get a kettle on or aren't we going to be that long?â She noticed that Jasper seemed a little distracted.
âWhat? Oh, sorry, no I don't think it'll take me that long to dig out some clothes.â She saw his eyes scanning over the furniture of the lounge.
âIs everything alright?â
âUh, I think so, probably just a little on edge. This may seem a bit of a weird request but could you just stay there for a bit and don't touch anything.â Still Jasper's eyes were glued to a pile of books on a coffee table. He walked slowly and carefully over to the coffee table, Elspeth noticed that he placed his feet very exactly.
âWhat? Are you expecting man traps or something?â asked Elspeth, her interest piqued by Jasper's slightly eccentric behaviour.
âNot exactly, it's just that for a while now I've set up a few bits and pieces that if they aren't in exactly the right place and in the right order then someone must have been in here and moved them. It's just that these books look a little out of alignment but to be honest I can't really tell.â Jasper then moved over to the stack of letters jammed apparently at random behind a vase of withered flowers on the mantelpiece. After checking the letters and the thin layer of dust around the base of the vase for signs of disturbance he stepped back apparently satisfied.
âLooks like I'm just being jumpy. I'll go and get some clothes.â Jasper left Elspeth in the lounge still a little incredulous at his actions. Whilst he was pulling clothes out of the chest of drawers in his bedroom, Elspeth had a chance to look around the lounge afresh. Although
