Maegen: Vital Force

Maegen is the vital force that flows through every living thing. It is intimately connected with one's luck and, like the Hamingja, may be directly impacted by the way in which we live our lives. Dishonorable choices, the breaking of one's word, doing harm to kin and community, or living in a way that brings harm to oneself all indirectly weaken one's vital force. Whereas luck is affected directly by our actions, those same actions cannot affect the vital energy itself. What those actions affect is our ability to be a strong container for that force and to tap into that vital power. Maegen is comparable to what Chinese tradition calls qi or chi, and it allows us to act in the world. It gives us the power to alter our wyrd and strengthen or weaken our luck and power. It may be seen as fertility of the spirit, increased or diminished by the quality of our deeds. Maegen is like a reservoir of power that keeps us hale and whole. Strengthening the will, the Hamingja, and the Lík all contribute to maintaining a strong Maegen. Maegen is our ability to access our luck and all the blessings the Gods have given. Developing discernment and being able to recognize the Gods' blessings in our lives both flow from and contribute to our Maegen.
