Chapter 14
The detectiveâs face was bright red. âIâm terribly sorry. I was in a hurry,â he said, stating the obvious.
I stepped aside to let him into the shop and then followed him inside. âSo was I,â I admitted. âDid you want to question me again?â
I looked up to see the sisters staring at him in horror. When Detective Cole saw them, his eyes widened. The three of them nodded to each other, and each took a step backwards. It was clear they knew each other, and there was something else going on. I thought it even more peculiar given the fact the detective lived in Wild Lime Mountain.
Daphne, keeping an eye on the detective, walked over to me. âWeâll wait for you in our shop,â she said. âCome to the cakery when youâre ready. Weâll put a closed sign on the door but will leave it open for you.â
With that, the sisters took off at a speed that belied their age, with Delilah looking back over her shoulder at the detective as they left. They were certainly uncomfortable with him.
He seemed to take a moment to recover. âNo, Iâm not here to question you. I need to buy a book.â
âWhat sort of book?â I asked without thinking.
The detective appeared uncomfortable. âI want to look through your technical section. Iâm looking for reference material.â
I was puzzled. âReference material? Wouldnât the Internet be better?â
The cat ran between my legs, nearly tripping me over. âSome bookshop owner you are!â she spat. âYou need people to buy booksâphysical books. Donât discourage customers!â
âI donât really like the Internet,â the detective admitted. âI like the feel of a proper book.â
âOh, I see.â I turned to Edison. âWhereâs the technical section?â
âIâll show him where it is,â Edison said.
The detective followed Edison, presumably to the technical section. As he lived locally, why had Edison looked so surprised to see him the other day? Or rather, he had looked alarmed or discomfited. And now the sisters looked that way as well. Were the three of them engaging in some illegal activity and feeling guilty when they saw the detective? I had no idea. My mind ran through the possibilitiesâcounterfeit ring, bank robbery, scammers, and other criminal activities.
Edisonâs words broke me out of my reverie. âShouldnât you go to your golf lesson?â
I chuckled. âI almost forgot about that.â I lowered my voice and added, âI got such a fright to see the detective. I thought he might be here to arrest me or at least question me again.â
âI will go and see what books heâs looking at,â JenniFur said before running after the detective, her tail fluffed up to the maximum.
I walked the short distance to the cakery. I had not really noticed it before. The architecture suggested an everyday shop front, wood with wide glass windows. That was where the ordinary and everyday ended.
Above the windows in a flowing script were the words, Lamington Lane Cakery. The left side of the name was pale blue with tiny roses painted over it.
