Chapter Twenty-Three

Gavin is still working on the map, and because of what Shira pointed out, I can’t bring myself to walk over to him. Instead, I look around everywhere but at his hill and notice the familiar blue bird is sitting on a branch of a tree a few feet away.

“I—“

The bird takes off before I can say more.

Shira frowns. “I don’t know about that bird,” she mutters.

“Why?”

“I just have a bad feeling about him.” She watches the bird’s flight through narrowed eyes.

“You don’t think the bird shaman is the reason why we can’t find the seer, do you?”

“I don’t know. It’s possible.”

My stomach twists into knots. I assumed the shrouded witch was behind the endless circles, but it’s foolish to make assumptions. Who knows how many are working against us… against me? If witches and shamans learn that I lack magic, they might be less inclined to kill me, or maybe more likely to.

“He needs to hurry up.” I wring my hands. He’s far enough that he can’t hear us, but I don’t want him to see how nervous I am, so I turn my back to him.

“You can’t do it yourself?” Shira asks.

“Nope. My magic, that kind of magic, is gone. That’s why I want to talk to the seer, to find out if I ever reacquire it, and if so, how. It… I feel naked without it, but I don’t feel like a part of me is missing. It’s just gone. Like it was never there to begin with.”

“I’m sorry,” she murmurs. “That must be so hard.”

“It is, but it must’ve happened for a reason.” I gulp. Most likely, this is atonement. I abused my powers the first time around, and now I’m being punished. Which means the likelihood of my regaining my magic might be an impossibility.

“Happened for a reason?” Shira frowns. “I understand that to an extent. I do think I was meant to meet you and Gavin. I—“ Her phone rings. As it has a few times every day since we’ve teamed up. And like all the times before, she ignores it.

“Who is that?” I ask.

“Don’t change the subject.”

“It’s not. Just diverting it a bit. Your mom?”

Her jaw muscle jumps.

“Does she know you’re all right at least?”

“Yes. But she wants me to come home. She thinks I’m too reckless and impulsive, and I totally am, but this is important. And I’m hoping it’ll help… that you’ll help…”

“That you will be able to learn how to shapeshift.”

“Yeah.” She smiles sheepishly. “I know that if I tell her I’m with you, she’d let me go, but—“

“Why would that make a difference?”

“I told you, Crystal. Everyone who has magic has heard of you. Even if not everyone realizes the extent of your power.”

“Past tense,” I mutter.

A cloud forms overhead, blotting out the sun so completely that it’s more like dusk than late morning. Must be one huge cloud—

It’s not a cloud after all. Or it is a cloud, but it’s not made up of moisture and fluffiness.

It’s made up of blue birds and raven and robins and other birds.
