THE GOLDEN TURKEY smells so good it would have made my stomach rumble if it was any other day. Jasper did his best this year, laying a feast on our becoming-too-small table, just to impress Zelda, his new mate.

I would roll my eyes at the antics, but I’m well aware I’m just jealous. Jealous because I met a girl who could be the one. She had everything to be the one, my true mate, the woman I’d spend my life with.

Tiny problem: she doesn’t believe me and she’s not staying in town. I did the one thing our parents told us never to do. I told someone outside the family about my shift. About my wolf.

A secret that could get me killed, or worse. Humans don’t like differences. They could hunt me down, arrest me, keep me locked up for research. My brothers and I could forever be the prey, all because I wanted to open my heart to her.

My wolf tells me not to worry, that Alaska is good. She wouldn’t tell anyone. More than that, since she didn’t believe me, she wouldn’t see a reason to share it. My wolf is also eager to shift and run back after her. He doesn’t care about her rejection. He thinks she’ll see through it soon enough. The bastard is hopeful.

The heart inside my chest aches as I watch Jasper and his mate set the table. Whispers and stolen kisses, the two dance around each other with eyes glimmering, full of affection. And it hurts that I could have had that. It hurts that she’s so close and, at the same moment, so far.

Lincoln walks in from the kitchen, a beer bottle in hand. “Ew, the two of you!” He complains so loud the entire town must have heard. “Get a room. I just can’t with your lovey-dovey eyes. They make me nauseous.”

Jasper and Zelda laugh. Zelda escapes to the kitchen as Jasper turns a proud look to us. “You sad, lonely things. I pity you.”

“I don’t need your pity,” Lincoln shoots back, but it’s all on good terms. Smirks stretch their lips and, this time, I do roll my eyes.

“No rush,” Jasper says as he walks away from us and into the kitchen. “Just as Mom and Dad used to say. Everything has a right time.”

Lincoln elbows me once we’re alone. “What’s up with you?”

I arch an eyebrow. Pretty sure I said nothing. “Why?”

“Too quiet.” He motions to the surrounding room with his bottle. “You love Christmas. Why are you so quiet?”

I shrug. “Nothing to say.”

Lincoln studies my face. I keep it schooled, but it’s hard to hide anything from my brothers. They know me too well. Finally, he drops his arm over my shoulders.

“The girl. The newcomer. It’s her, isn’t it?”

I shake my head. “Already told you, I’m fine.” But my heart wrenches, missing Alaska. My wolf whines inside me.

Lincoln touches his bottle to my chest. “Your wolf is upset. And you and me both know why.”

“He just wants to run and howl to the moon.
