Chapter 10
Julia and Sam went back to Samâs accommodation. As they approached the building, they saw a group of people waiting outside the main door, including Melissa and her mum.
Sam called over to a young man, âGavin, whatâs going on? Why are you all outside?â
Gavin replied, âThe cops told us to get out. Theyâre searching everywhere. I donât know how long theyâre going to be.â
As if on cue, the main door opened and DI Thostlewaite came out. He was followed by a couple of uniformed officers. The inspector bellowed, âYou can go back in now. Thanks for your patience.â He ambled away from the door.
There was a bit of mumbling and moaning from the people whoâd been waiting outside. They began to make their way towards the main door. Sam and Julia followed behind.
Something caught Juliaâs attention. She frowned. There was something wrong here. Hadnât she been â¦? Her thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of her phone. She answered it. It was her dad.
âHello there, love,â Dad said in a cheery manner. âWe canât let you loose anywhere, can we? What have you got yourself involved in now? Did you get those links I sent you?â
âThe ones about removing hexes and curses? Yes, I got them. Dad, Iâm not cursed. I just seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.â
Dad chuckled. âIâd say you were in the right place at the right time. I know youâre not cursed, I was only having a laugh with you. Iâm glad youâre there with Sam at this terrible time. Having his friend die, especially in suspicious circumstances, would have been hard for him to deal with if you werenât there. Howâs he doing?â
âHeâs doing alright. Do you want to talk to him?â
âIâll text him later. I wanted to make sure you were alright too. Have you made yourself known to the local police yet? Have you been making your own investigations? Have you got a list of suspects? I bet you have.â He chuckled again.
A shadow fell over Julia and she looked up to see DI Thostlewaite inspecting her. His eyes bored right into hers.
Julia turned away slightly and said, âDad, I have to go now. Iâll speak to you later. Iâm coming home tomorrow. Iâll tell you everything then.â
âAye, you do that, love. Take care of Sam, and take care of yourself.â
Julia could still feel the inspectorâs eyes on her so she quickly ended the call and put her phone away. She turned back to the inspector and gave him a bright smile.
DI Thostlewaite gave her a solemn nod in return. âMs Blake, can I have a quiet word with you, please?â
Julia looked over at Sam. He said, âIâll wait inside for you.â He walked towards the main door and went in.
DI Thostlewaite took Julia to one side and said, âWhat have you found out about Elliot Scottâs death?â
Julia folded her arms. âWhy would I have found anything out? I donât work for the police.â
DI Thostlewaite stared into her eyes and didnât say anything.
