Waiting for Ellie and whoever that Nova guy was—the name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t remember why—took forever. I paced across my small studio apartment, biting my nails to their beds.

A buzz sounded, and I rushed to the door. I descended the stairwell, and headed to the second door in the hall, the street entrance to the apartment. Yanking the door open, I gritted my teeth at the subtle chill of the night air. I probably should have put on pants for this.

“This is Beatrice,” Ellie was saying from somewhere to my left as the guy standing in front of the door sighed in relief at my appearance. His curly hair shifted in the breeze, and I recognized him as Dhalia’s friend from Against the Grain. Nova.

“He’s a talker, isn’t he?” Nova said with a laugh. “At least, when he’s drunk.”

With a frown, I stepped out onto the street and watched Ellie as he leaned in and tapped on the glass. “Goodnight, Beatrice,” he said to the opossum in a sing-songy voice. Then he looked at me, and the edges of his mouth curled up in a small, shy smile. “Hello, Felix.”

Every molecule of my body warmed, and I swallowed thickly as I said, “Hey, Ellie.”

“Argh, you two are so cute I’m gonna barf,” Nova joked as he backed toward the cab idling at the curb.

“Thanks for bringing him,” I said, though I wasn’t sure if I was angry or not that Nova let Ellie get drunk. Ellie wasn’t some doe-eyed, small town girl lost in the big city, but for all his age and maturity, he had been sheltered to a certain extent. I didn’t think he’d ever been drunk before. “Where did you find him?”

Hand on the cab door, Nova said, “Um, a gay bar in Greenwich. He was standing outside looking like a scared fawn, so I took him under my wing. We had a good chat, didn’t we, Ellie?”

Ellie, who was standing very close to me all of sudden, nodded. “I drank witch’s brew,” he said haughtily, “and it was delicious.”

“He’s a fucking trip,” Nova snorted.

“Yeah,” I agreed with a smile up at Ellie. “Let’s get you inside.”

Nodding meekly, Ellie shuffled closer, until we were almost touching, and I startled when his tail snaked around my ankle. I looked down with wide eyes, then glanced at Nova. He was barely holding back laughter.

“Good luck, human,” he said, then he folded himself into the cab and shut the door.

I waved absently at him as the cab pulled away, most of my focus on the stiff appendage squeezing my leg. Ellie didn’t seem to notice his tail getting up close and personal with my ankle bone. When the hard tip of it dipped inside my sock, I squeaked.

“Let’s go inside,” I said hurriedly, stepping away from him.

His tail fell away, and I sighed in relief. Not that I didn’t want his tail on me, but it was a little weird. I wasn’t sure what the proper etiquette was when an Incubi’s tail got all touchy-feely.
