The Boston & Maine Railroad steamer Mount Washington at Wolfeboro Town Docks with railroad, early 1900s. Shown here is the Eastern Railroad train connecting with the Mount Washington. The large Boston & Maine building in the rear burned in 1899. In 1884, in accordance with general legislation obtained for the purpose, the Boston & Maine leased the entire Eastern Railroad system. That portion of the White Mountains Region adjoining Ossipee, of which North Conway, Intervale, Kearsarge Village and Jackson are the conspicuous centers, is one of the most delightful of the Eastern Division. Ever since the people of New England began to seek the uplands of New Hampshire for relief from the summer heat and business cares, this particular domain of the benignant vacation spirit has been favorably known as a mountain resort. The first of its boardinghouses was opened many years ago, when the mountains themselves were an almost undiscovered country.
There is something satisfying in the vistas one enjoys here, both verdant meadows and distant snow-capped peaks of the Presidential Range, as well as the indescribable balmy air that wafts down from those noble peaks and across those luxuriant meadows, that one seems to be almost in some land where the crowded cities and the noises of commerce were never heard.
The ministration of the Saco River, that delightful stream whose beauties have been described by many writers and placed upon artistsâ canvases, has much to do with the scenic primacy of the area landscape. Some of the most superb views of Mount Washington are unfolded to us from a distance.
Ever since Darby Field first saw the White Mountains more than 275 years ago, they have drawn people to the Saco River Valley. The first explorers journeyed here on foot and in the saddle through the trackless forest; they were followed by the pathfinders of the region, the Crawfords, Rosebrooks and Willeys, who established the first White Mountain inns. They were in turn succeeded by an ever-increasing number of people seeking relief from the heat and dust of the cities, willing to journey to this garden spot of the state. Crawford Notch easily met their requirements.
