Al-Juwaynī and the Old Testament

Al-Juwaynī considers first the theoretical possibility, then actual examples, of what he considers to be textual corruption of the Old Testament. He then follows the same procedure for the New Testament. He argues that the loss of the original Tawrāt is plausible because of Nebuchadnezzar’s sack of Jerusalem (which occurred in the 6th century BCE), and adds that Ezra, or possibly one of his followers, re-wrote the text so as to enhance his own power and prominence.123

As for an actual example of textual corruption, al-Juwaynī cites the difference in ages of the descendants of Adam found between Jews and Christians (reflecting differences between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint). This passage follows very closely parts of Ibn Ḥazm’s account of the same issue, though with some minor differences.124
