As Australian public policy moved from assimilation to multiculturalism, soccer, the most inclusive of codes, became pilloried for allowing if not encouraging migrant groups to establish and retain institutions that focused on the cultures and communities that some groups of migrants brought to Australia. Many newcomers tried and failed to find acceptance in existing clubs, sometimes those of relatively recent groups of migrants, and were thus forced to form their own if they wished to continue playing the game. Having been discriminated against by the host society, some of the migrant groups discriminated against Australians of longer standing who wanted to join them. Kevin Christopher, fanzine editor, participant in David Hill’s ‘soccer summit’ and passionate advocate of the game, regularly inveighed against clubs like South Melbourne Hellas and Melbourne Croatia, later the Melbourne Knights, whose stadia and spectators made him feel threatened and unwelcome.29
