In all the ills that befall us, we are more concerned by the intention than the result. ―Rousseau

His phone rang, pulling him out of a dead sleep. Cici’s shattered expression from the night before haunted him, but Sam knew, deep in his bones, he was doing the right thing for Isabel. Cici would get over it. But knowing that hadn’t stopped him from battling his sheets and slamming his fist into his pillow for hours.

“Chastain,” he barked into his phone, groggy. The first hints of gray light seeped around his blinds. He glanced at the clock. Just after four-thirty. He flopped back against the pillow with a groan. A paltry handful of hours’ sleep for the second night in a row.

Now that his brain began to function, he immediately began to worry Cici wouldn’t get over his storming out last night. She might not forgive him—or want to hang out with a loser victim like him.

“Detective? It’s Damian. We got a body.”

Sam’s mind stopped, clicked on the word. Body. A homicide. “Woman?” he asked, but he already knew. Cici and her goddamn dreams.

“Yeah. She’s ah . . . she doesn’t look too good.”

“Where are you?” Sam asked.

“Behind the Five and Dime.”

On the Plaza. Cici’s dream coordinates proved accurate. Sam scrubbed his hand over his face, wishing his eyes weren’t so gritty.

“Be there in fifteen.”

“See you then, Detective.”
