Kate’s Diary 20 October 1893 8 St James Street

Lying here in bed writing this after the birth of another son – Frederick Dennis. Will has said that I must rest, as it was a long and arduous labour. Little Freddy is in his cot sleeping peacefully and I feel all at peace myself. Our new surroundings are so much better than before, and I really feel there is hope this time. Ironically, we are only just over the road from where we lived before, but I hear Mr Tucker’s moved away, thank goodness. The bank foreclosed on him and he lost the shop. Serves him right, I guess, though it’s not a nice thing to happen to anyone.

The new flat is clean and well kept, with no dirty water or holes in the floor, thank goodness. The landlady is Mrs Lewis, a widow, who has a little draper’s shop on the ground floor, all very neat and tidy. Mind, there are a lot of stairs as we are up on the third floor, and in the last few weeks of my confinement that’s been mighty hard. But Will has been much kinder and more understanding this time. I know he is trying his best to be a good husband, and these have been a happy couple of months since we moved in. He’s hardly been to the pub at all and has been working hard to keep the bills paid. I can’t say I’ve really forgiven him for the beating he gave me last July, but I hope he has learnt his lesson. Must try and forget the past and move on. His temper has certainly been better lately, thank the lord.

Saw Louisa in the market the other day but she looked me straight in the face, then turned away. It’s a shame, I like her, but she doesn’t understand the position I’m in. After all, she’s never been married or had any children.

I read in the newspapers that the Irish Home Rule bill’s been defeated again – got through the ‘Commons’ this time but was turned down by those snooty old Lords. Typical! Ireland will never be free, I think.
