I sat at my desk and looked nervously at the number in my phone for a ridiculous amount of time. Every now and then, I felt the need to look up into the main office to check that nobody was watching me. Nobody was, or if they were, they were doing a good job of not being caught. That should have reassured me, but in reality, it didn’t make me any less nervous about what I had to do.

I told myself it was ridiculous. She was only another human, after all. I’d rang plenty of women up before now without feeling this nervous, or nervous at all, in fact. What I was anxious about in the first place, I had no idea, as I’d spent the best part of the previous night speaking to Mollie. We’d already talked about everything under the sun. This would be a five-minute call at most.

It wasn’t as if I was trying to ask her out or anything. I had an actual, work-related reason to ring her. Despite that, I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed about hitting “call”. She would perhaps think that I was trying to ask her out while hiding it behind the excuse of the case. I wasn’t above such a tactic, after all. I’d done exactly that yesterday when trying to get Mel to talk to me.

Amid my inner turmoil, I’d almost forgotten about Mel and her reaction to the events of last night. The look on her face when she’d entered Jeff’s and seen me there with Mollie was plaguing me. She must have thought I’d lured her there just to rub Mollie in her face. If she hadn’t been speaking to me before, she definitely wouldn’t be now. I would have staked everything I owned on the fact.

I’d have to track Mel down at some point today and explain to her that it wasn’t how it looked, if she’d entertain me long enough for me to be able to do so, of course.

Giving my head a decisive shake, I directed myself back to the dilemma at hand. There was nothing else for it. Someone had to ring Mollie, and as I’d already told the team I would, it had to be me, even if it did make her think I was trying to ask her out. With a deep, steadying breath, I tapped my screen and waited for her to pick up.

After an agonising three rings, she answered.

“Ringing already, DCI Marshall,” she said in mild surprise. “It does nothing for your street cred, you know.”

My nerves dissipated as I listened to her mocking tone, and I stifled a laugh. “What street cred?” I asked.

“I thought you liked to give the impression of being aloof. What would people think if I told them you rang me after…” She paused, presumably to check the time and quickly do the maths. “Eight hours.”

I chuckled and then abruptly stopped myself, taking another look into the main office to make sure nobody was watching. Luckily, I was still safe.
