WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

The spiritual world for scientifically literate people does not have to be some nether realm or escape fantasy. As we let our consciousness spread outward from Midgard along the Cosmic Uroboros into the larger and smaller scales of reality, we revitalize in a modern way the ancient experience of being surrounded by the spiritual world with no clear dividing line between it and the physical reality of Earth. We can use the metaphor of the serpent to send our consciousness far beyond all earlier cultures’ spiritual horizons to see, in the mind’s eye, the entire Cosmic Uroboros. The new understanding of our cosmic place at the center of all possible sizes is grounded in scientific knowledge, but our experience, our sense that we are present and part of this universe, can only be called spiritual.

This matters because we don’t fully understand how we fit into the universe if we don’t feel that we are part of it. Feelings don’t tell us what’s true, but they do tell us what we believe. If we don’t believe that we’re part of this universe, then we have missed the point—that this universe is real.

Most of the universe is spiritual but only if we remember what those words mean. If people ever slip back into prescientific fantasy and shadows and forget this new cosmology, the spiritual world will disappear like a lost Eden.

Most of the scientific universe is spiritual! We should be shouting this from the rooftops. We have the choice today to see reality as it truly is, to the best of our collective ability. If we draw creatively from the ocean of metaphors in our minds to connect our feelings more intimately with what we now understand; if we share the knowledge and wisdom we have been bequeathed by brave and brilliant explorers who have gone before us and are even now serving us; if we open our minds willingly and exuberantly to a real God in the real universe, we will find that there is indeed a spiritual world. We live in its physical core, but the emerging God has made it possible to see the whole.
