“Thanks, Granddad,” Christian said.

They were standing in the doorway to the villa, Christian leaning on the frame and his grandfather on the step facing him. The old man had watched, saying little, while Christian put the dishes away, rinsed off a few, and generally put the kitchen to rights. Or at least close enough that it wouldn’t be a problem come morning.

“For what?” Silvio said innocently. “I did nothing. You had an old man over for dinner like a good grandson should.”

“You know for what,” Christian said, narrowing his eyes with a smile. “For being nice to Noah.”

“Christian, what did I say to you?” his grandfather replied. “Your parents want you to be settled and happy, and I want you to be settled and happy. Not bouncing around Miami, not wandering back and forth between America and Italia like a transient, but happy. No matter what is happening with your mother and father right now, they both, like I, love you and want you to make your way in the world.”

He sighed before continuing.

“This Noah is a good boy, I can tell. You choose wisely.”

“I didn’t choose him,” Christian protested. “He just kind of fell into my lap.”

Silvio shook his head. “These are details your grandfather does not need to hear.”

“Granddad!”

The old man laughed. Christian laughed with him.

“He has a good head on his shoulders,” he said to Christian. “He knows wine, he can cook, he has his goals… even if he doesn’t know where they will lead.” He alluded back to Noah’s admission over dinner of what he had already told Christian, his uncertainty over where art history might take him.

“But it’s clear that it is leading somewhere, and that’s good. You could learn a lot from him.”

“I’m not sure,” Christian finally confessed. “Really? I mean, there are times when it feels like there’s some kind of real connection between us, something that could mean a future, but there are other times when it feels so superficial. Like it’s just a summer fling, something that happened because we were sharing a house, not for any other reason.”

“Did your father ever tell you how he met your mother?”

Christian considered it. His parents, while they loved each other (or so he thought… hoped…), had never been overly romantic types. Christian was certain it had come up at some point, but damned if he could remember it. They had never been the types to swan around each other, telling it like a romantic bedtime story. A thought gave him a twinge of anxiety: if they were both more romantic, would they be closer together now?

“I’m not sure,” he replied. “Probably? If so, I don’t remember it.”

His grandfather laughed. “Your father and I were hired to restore her family’s house.”

Christian grinned, almost laughing. “And let me guess, she was there that summer inspecting the wine?”

“Don’t be foolish,” the old man said. “She was inspecting the oil paintings.”

He nodded politely to his grandson, a gesture of great respect from his elder as far as Christian was concerned, and began the trip back to the village.
