“Now I see why Peter would try to hide you,” said Mae. “I have to say, you’re a brave person to take a chance with a man like that.”

“He was worth it,” Chloe said quietly. “Peter was the best kind of guy. I miss him terribly. I try not to think about it too much, or else I can’t even….”

“I know,” said Mae softly thinking about the loss of her husband. “I know.” After a moment, Mae asked, “If you and Peter were trying to keep your relationship a secret, how did you happen to be at that huge downtown party with him and all the rest of those men? It sounds like you already knew they could be very dangerous.”

“Yes, I knew,” Chloe said. “I was very worried when Peter said he was going to be there with those men. I tried to talk him out of going. I would have been very happy to spend a quiet New Year’s Eve alone with him, at anyplace he wanted to go.”

She held the lap robe close, staring into space. “But Peter said he had to go out with them sometimes or they’d get suspicious about him and his family trying to leave the mob. He told me he’d make it up to me later, and he was only going with them because he had to.

Chloe shook her head. “Now, I know that sounds pretty suspicious, like he was meeting another woman there or something, but that just wasn’t Peter. I decided if he had to go to that party, then I’d go, too, and surprise him.”

“I see,” said Mae, nodding slightly.

Chloe looked at Mae and managed a little smile. “Sure, I wanted to make sure nothing like that was going on, but really, it wasn’t just that.”

The young woman closed her eyes again for a few seconds. “I wanted to see him. I missed him. I wanted to spend New Year’s Eve with him because I thought we would be celebrating the year when everything would change and we could be together without the threat of his father’s mob associates hanging over us. I knew he might be a little upset if he saw me at the party, but I didn’t see any harm in going. I guess I saw it as a form of hiding in plain sight.”

Mae said, “As in … Peter’s friends would hardly suspect you were his girlfriend if it looked to them like he’d just met you.”

“That’s right. Loads of people were meeting and hooking up at the biggest New Year’s Eve bash in town. I thought I could play it as being just one more girl he talked to at the party.”

“Did your friends know who he really was?”

“My sorority sisters? Absolutely not. They didn’t know anything about it. I never said a word to any of them about seeing Peter. Not ever.”

“What about Peter’s Russian friends? Did they know who you were?”

“No, they didn’t. Peter never talked to them about me, just like I never talked to anyone about him.
