Chapter Six – Theo

Deep into the holiday season, the profits soared. No doubt about it, Cat’s approach to the restaurant was working. Unfortunately, the success of the restaurant seemed to infuriate his family members more than it pleased them, which gave him the strong impression that they wanted the restaurant to fail. They thirsted for an excuse to sell it off, get some quick cash, and then moving on to different business ventures. They definitely didn’t care about helping his mother’s health. If anything, several of them were vultures, just waiting for his mother to die so they could also cash in on her last will. He hated it. Every single aspect of it ignited a burning rage in his heart.

I’m trying my hardest right now to make this work. I’ve found someone who actually can make it work. Sure, still need to wait until the profit is more obvious, but right now, it’s clear on this trajectory, the business will succeed more than when my mom ran it.

Yet no one damn well cared about it at all.

He watched as the restaurant burst into activity from the outside, eyes trailing over Cat as she hustled from table to table, taking orders with a precision that he suspected he could never manage.

He felt good, watching all this – right up until the point when his father pulled up in the nearby parking lot and stepped out of the car. He didn’t say a word at first – just stood beside his son and watched as the restaurant filled up and passersby stopped and stared in the window at the inviting warmth of the Brimstone.

“For God’s sake,” Molen eventually said. “It actually is doing well.”

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you,” Theo replied. “The investment is paying off. The business is looking successful, and I have high hopes it’ll only get better from here.”

“Damn it,” Molen said, still in curse mode. “I don’t believe this. You weren’t supposed to actually save the business.”

“Wasn’t I, now?” Theo said, glaring at his father. “Then why did you let me take it over if that was the case?” Theo had suspected as much from the lack of effort expressed by his father, but to hear his father actually say it out loud infuriated him. The asshole could at least act appreciative of all this. Even if he didn’t feel appreciative.

“You already know why. No one expected this to become a success. Everyone believed this business was going to fail in the end, and, honestly, I was just humoring you because I respect at least that this was an important place for Elaria. Heck, that’s why I tried for so long. Unfortunately, there is only so much you can do before it all ends.” He paused, closing his eyes for a moment.

“I assume you’re getting a shitload of pressure from your brother right now.”

“Yeah, Brok wants to sell the place. Already has his eyes on another business he wants to buy and claims he’s relying on the place being sold soon to get that part of his money to invest.
