Chapter Fourteen

The Truth and Nothing But the Truth

“Oh the nerves, the mystery of this machine called man.”

“That’s not a good idea. Simon is still recovering. He might react better hearing the information from me.”

It was as good an excuse as I could come up with not to spend time with him going to the hospital.

“It’s not just a matter of him hearing this,” he assured me. “I need to ask him a few questions about the information. He might feel better if you’re there too.”

How could I argue with that?

“That’s fine.” I drew in a deep, exasperated breath. “But I’ll drive.”

“Great.” He eyed the Bentley in the drive. “I’ve always wanted to ride in one of those. It’s in great shape too.”

“What? No. That’s not what I meant. You drive your car, and I’ll drive mine.” I smiled to make the words less harsh. “You always say you don’t want to be far from your car in case duty calls, right?”

He looked away and ran his hand through his red hair as the afternoon breeze teased it. “Look, I didn’t mean to make you nervous this afternoon. I’m sorry. Sometimes I forget that we’ve been apart for so long.”

So he’d felt it too? All the more reason not to get in any car with him.

“It wasn’t your fault. You don’t have to apologize.” And I don’t want to talk about it. “If you’re coming with me, let’s go. I have a meeting tonight.”

“Book Shop Owners of America?” he quipped.

“No. Paranormal investigators.” I opened the driver’s side door.

“Writing a mystery with ghosts in it?” He walked around the back of the car to the passenger side.

“Yes. Maybe. She’s a friend of mine from a writing group.”

“Uh oh.” He stopped at the back of the Bentley. “Your tag is expired. I guess we’ll be taking my car after all.”

I stormed to the back and glanced at the plate. “It’s only a month past due. Surely there must be some leeway.”

“Did you give people leeway when they brought in an overdue library book?” He watched my face. “That’s what I thought. Let’s take my car.”

As soon as he had walked away, I kicked the Bentley’s bumper in frustration. This just wasn’t my day.

I had a little talk with myself on the way to his car. It wasn’t a big deal. Nothing crazy was going to happen between us. There was nothing to worry about.

After that personal conversation, I sauntered over to his car where he stood holding the door open and got inside. My skirt got caught when he closed the door, but I corrected it right away.

Eyes facing forward. No more intimate conversations or bringing up things that had happened in the past. I pretended that Daniel was a taxi driver with something in the back seat so I couldn’t ride there. He started the car, and we drove away.

“I heard what happened to you on the roof,” he said. “Well, off the roof. That was amazing that Aine Ulster could catch you without breaking something.
