Chapter Twenty Five

Simon was officially insane. He had to be because, yet again, and against his better judgment, he'd allowed himself to be hoodwinked into allowing Edith and Branwell into another one of his investigations. And not just them; bloody Alexander Elliott was now a part of the crime-fighting ensemble. What was it with that family? Wasn't there a crazy daughter and granddaughter somewhere as well? If he wasn't careful, the whole sodding lot of them would be taking over. He'd had a gut feeling that Emma would talk to them; he'd spotted the exchange of furtive looks as they'd exited the interview room when Simon, ever the detective, had been hiding behind the back of one of the filing cabinets waiting for them to come out.

It hadn't helped that Emma had been right about everything—not that he'd acknowledged that to her, of course. Her smug grin when he announced to them in The Dog and Pheasant that Estella had been poisoned had been too much for him to bear. But she knew that he knew she was right, and that seemed to satisfy Emma enough to keep her quiet—for now.

As he navigated the car out of the busy city streets and onto the quieter, tree-lined B roads, the anger bubbling away inside him evaporated as the landscape transformed from one of concrete and bricks to that of rolling, green fields.

Alexander fricking Elliott! The smarmy, know-it-all, who, up until last week, had just been an image on one of Edith's many family photographs, not that Simon had ever really paid attention to them when he'd gone around to her house. Although thinking about it now, he secretly wished that he had because if he'd recognised Alexander when he'd first walked into that bar, he would span on his heels and walk straight back out again.

It was probably because Alexander was everything that Simon wasn't, which made him dislike him so much. All of the women's eyes had been firmly fixed on him and not Simon that night in the bar. And now, to top it off, his sergeant was swooning and fawning all over him within minutes of meeting the man. Not that Simon was jealous of Alexander and Emma as such, but she was like a daughter to him—actually, a younger sister. Yes, that sounded better. He wasn't that much older than her, after all. But maybe it was the mere fact that Alexander didn't even have to try to schmooze women. He simply showed up and opened his mouth. Alexander didn't have to worry about dieting, or buying oversized shirts to fit around his expanding tummy, or shaving his nostrils and the tops of his ears. He probably had abs, too—he looked the type to have abs. Prick.

'Are you still sulking?' Emma asked, finally breaking him away from his self-destructive thoughts.

'No!' snapped Simon, and then, realising he did indeed sound like he was sulking, added, 'I'm just trying to get my head around everything. Did you manage to
