CHAPTER SIX

THE yearning wouldn’t go away.

If anything, standing in front of the ward Christmas tree and letting memories from the past out of their locked cage had made it worse.

Andy could feel that moment when he’d proposed to Gemma as if it had just happened. The confidence of his love for her that he’d been so sure would carry them through anything life could throw at them. The excitement at the thought of being a father, which had been so unexpected because he’d known that Gemma would have resisted starting a family for as long as possible. The sheer joy of her acceptance of his proposal... Knowing that he’d won. He’d found the holy grail of winning a partner for life.

Something that huge and that real couldn’t have simply faded into nothingness, could it?

Bled to death in the wake of the trauma of Gemma leaving him?

No.

Those few minutes in front of the Christmas tree had let Andy know without a shadow of a doubt that it was all still there.

On his side, at least.

But what about Gemma? There’d been that moment earlier this evening when he’d thought he could see something that suggested it hadn’t changed for her either. Not below the surface.

That look in her eyes when Hazel had dropped the verbal bombshell that Sophie might be going to die.

He hadn’t imagined that link. The kind of connection that only came from knowing somebody else almost as well as you knew yourself.

If it had just been the knowledge it would have little more than a shared memory but there had been something much bigger in that shared glance. An expectation of trust, because that was what was being offered.

And somehow, putting those components together had added up to much, much more than he would have expected the total to be. The combination of a shared past and continued trust could only be fused by love.

Yes. If he chose to interpret that moment with an open mind—or rather heart—he might believe that beneath the landslide of rubble they’d piled onto their relationship and tried to bury it with there was still a rock-solid foundation. It was possible that Gemma still loved him.

As much as he still loved her?

Could he go there with some emotional rescue dogs and sniff out some signs of life beneath that rubble?

Did he want to?

Maybe he didn’t but maybe he had no choice.

He’d never moved on, had he? He’d tried. God knew, he’d tried so many times but the initial flash of attraction he might have discovered with other women soon flickered out. As much as he desperately wanted to find them, the channels that created the kind of connection he’d had with Gemma didn’t seem to exist with anybody else.

Without any conscious decision, Andy found his feet moving him back towards Gemma’s room. The route took him past the nurses’ station.

‘Andy?’ Lisa was sitting at the desk beside the phone. She looked up, about to say something, but then frowned. ‘You OK?’

Oh...help. Did his disturbed emotional state show on his face that clearly? ‘I’m fine,’ he said.
