Later on that nightâ¦.
The bedroom door pushed open and Shanice entered looking exhausted with bags under her eyes the size of sandbags. She quickly stripped out of her clothes and slipped on her silk night gown before tossing her hair into a messy ponytail. Yawning, she climbed on the bed and I encircled my arms around her body as she snuggled closely to my bare chest.
âI missed you so much baby. Being away from you these past few days was hard,â Shanice admitted.
Watching Shanice leave with the kids had my heart in pain, but I understood why she left. I never shouldâve thrown the Christmas tree outside and made the kids cry. That was some bitch shit.
âAre you sure youâre gonna be able to stay here with us? I wouldnât be mad if you wanted to get a hotel. I know my mom can be a handful,â she sighed.
Of course, I didnât want to stay under her bougie ass motherâs roof, but I was man enough to put my feelings to the side to be with my family. Vivian was vindictive and would do anything to make me look like the bad guy. I refused to give her that satisfaction. Nonetheless, I planned on eating up all her food and annoying her with my presence.
âStaying here isnât an issue.â
My phone began vibrating on the nightstand. Picking it up, I saw that it was my pops calling. I frowned my face and sent him straight to voicemail.
âWho is that?â Shanice probed.
âMy pops.â I shrugged nonchalantly.
âBaby, you shouldâve picked up. It could be an emergency.â She was concerned.
âIt ainât no emergency,â I assured her.
âHow do you know, Willie? He just had hip surgery. What if he needs you? I think you should call him back.â
âEven if he did Shanice, Iâm all the way in South Carolina. What am I supposed to do? Get on a broom and fly?â he laughed.
âThatâs not funny. Call him back. He might of fell or something.â She gave me a firm look.
âBaby, I promise nothing is wrong. He is calling to ask me again if we can go to family counseling. He believes talking about my momâs death will help us heal as a family. Itâs a little too late for that shit. I rather not talk about it at all.â I was angry.
After my mom died from cancer, I started rebelling and fighting a lot, so my pops sent me to a reform school because he thought it would change my behavior. I didnât need him to send me away. I needed him to love me unconditionally and tell me everything would be okay even though my mama was gone. When he couldnât deal with me, he thought that was the best solution. That nigga had some nerve when he lied in my face and said my mom had the flu, knowing she was dying. I never got the opportunity to say goodbye. Fuck going to counseling and fuck him too. I would never do my kids like Willie Sr.
