CHAPTER SIX
âHOW are you, today, Jason?â Sophie glanced at the five-year-old. There was still some slight puffiness about his face, but in general he looked a whole lot better than he had done when sheâd first seen him down in A and E some days ago. She checked his blood pressure and noted the reading down on his chart.
These last few days she had been trying to go on with her job at the hospital as though everything in her life was completely normal, as though everything she believed in hadnât been shaken to its foundations. Lucas had held her and comforted her, but even he hadnât been able to coax her out of her state of shock. She hadnât known what to do, or which way to turn.
At least the pace of life at the hospital meant that she had little time to dwell on her own problems.
Jason lifted his thin shoulders. âIâm all right.â He frowned and added in a disgruntled tone, âBut I donât like the food here. Itâs boring, and they donât let me have any salt with it.â His bottom lip jutted.
Sophie smiled. It was good to see that at least he cared about what he was eating. That hadnât been the case a while back when sheâd gone to visit him in Intensive Care. Back then, heâd been too ill to pay any attention to what had been going on around him. The streptococcal infection had caused the glomeruli, the tiny blood vessels in his kidneys, to become inflamed, leaving his kidneys less able to do their job of filtering waste products. That had left his body in a toxic state.
âIâll ask the dietician to come and talk to you,â she said. âSheâs the lady who knows all about food and whatâs good to eat. Perhaps she can help to find something that youâd like, something thatâs good for you at the same time.â
His brows lifted in surprise as he tried to take that in. âWill you?â He looked pleased.
âYes, I will. The thing is,â Sophie explained, âweâre trying to keep you off salt for a while, because it will make you poorly.â
âIâve already been poorly.â Jason pulled a face and added, âBut now I want to go home. Can I go home soon?â His dark hair fell across his forehead in an unruly wave, and she had to resist the urge to gently push it back into place and soothe away his troubled frown.
âOf course you do.â The child had been very ill, but at least now theyâd been able to transfer him from Intensive Care to the childrenâs ward, much to his motherâs delight. âYouâre doing very well now, and Iâm very pleased with you, but we just need to keep you in hospital for a little bit longer to make sure that everything is as it should be.â She was thoughtful for a moment or two. âIâll ask Amy if sheâll come along and find something to keep you amusedâmaybe a
