OUR TALK OF THINGS SMALL AND NEEDING ADMIRATION

It’s possible he was an anarchist,

the subdued kind. What he didn’t say

wedged its way into conversations,

gazelle leaps in the midst of things

small and needing admiration. Some

called him foolhardy but in his presence

became tongue-tied, like anyone would

walking about on terra firma or looking

out train windows, longing for some

place other to live.

   One wonders what

responsibility comes with having thoughts

at odds with prevailing ideas—is there

a path set forth, irreversible, down which

not to proceed would in no way negate

yet mysteriously, inevitably make more

apparent?

  Surely some are called but

never answer or lose focus; some springs

rise to ride the ground only to sink

a few feet away, never to be seen

again, and who knows what reward

such momentary being allows someone

dipping a hand into the flow, feeling

the cool.

 Who knows, though,

what anyone else is saying, what anyone

else is hearing themselves say, which

may sound nothing like what others

hear and none of it what needs to be

said, be heard, as if always waking

to November when May is what puts

the mind at ease, its mornings ample

and languishing in nothing that feels

like despair or apology but like

a precedent, hinting toward vastness

before settling

 into this smallest joy.
