Sarah May () was born in Hong Kong and is of mixed Korean and Pākehā heritage. She is currently studying English and Psychology at the University of Auckland.

‘Water torture’ is about revealing a terrible secret. Sarah says she ‘first heard about the awful, insanity-inducing dripping of “Chinese water torture” in primary school – though I have since learnt it was likely invented by an Italian lawyer – and the memory of it floats up whenever I experience an agonising moment like this. Seconds seem to tick at uneven intervals, like droplets on a waiting forehead.’
