Chapter 4

Gavin had done it again. He’d made things awkward. That had to be the reason Jonathan hadn’t spoken to him, despite being at knitting club for—he checked his watch—twenty minutes. Of course, Jonathan had been pulled into conversation with the others who were all absolutely thrilled because Janice had finally completed her damn blanket.

He’d talked too much last week. All Jonathan needed was help picking out new yarn. He didn’t sign up to hear about Gavin’s problems in high school. After this week, Jonathan would finish his scarf and be out of Gavin’s life.

Gavin hated that. He had barely scratched the surface of the man who was Jonathan Mercier. Teaching him how to crochet had given Gavin a taste—Jonathan was kind, shy, and perhaps a little lonely. Gavin wanted to know more, but he had to tread carefully. Jonathan was still a library patron.

Jonathan leaned over to look at Janice’s blanket, and Gavin couldn’t help but admire the curve of his hip, the way his ass fit his dark wash jeans. See, this was the damn problem. Gavin ached to touch, to know what Jonathan tasted like, to see the shape of his face in a moment of passion. Both his body and his mind were in agreement, and ordinarily that meant he’d ask Jonathan out.

If he was looking for a boyfriend. Which he was not. Not after Trevor cheated on him. No, Gavin was perfectly happy being single.

Janice said something that had Jonathan’s lips stretching into a wide grin, and he threw his head back as he laughed, revealing the long line of his neck.

Gavin swallowed hard and brought his attention back to the peach hat in his lap. He’d slipped a stitch a few rows back, and now he had to undo all his work. He pulled out his needles and decided to start over, this time with a simpler pattern. Clearly his mind was not on his knitting.

“Hey.” Jonathan came over and sat next to Gavin.

Gavin forced himself to smile. Maybe he hadn’t made such a mess of things after all. It wasn’t Jonathan’s fault his head kept spinning. “Hey.”

“I only had to rip it out once.” Jonathan presented his half-finished scarf. “But I think I really understand the pattern now.”

He’d come such a long way from that first day at knitting club. Jonathan’s stitches were clean and even. He’d mastered the pattern, producing rows of crossed double crochets that formed a repeating diamond. Even the colors he’d chosen were perfect, creating a delightful contrast. His aunt would love this.

“You’re doing fantastic. Sometimes I need a few tries before I can get a pattern down.” Gavin handed the scarf back.

“Thanks.” Jonathan stared down at his work in progress, his cheeks going pink. “I hope I’ll be done by next week.”

Next week. Christmas. Who knew if Gavin would even see Jonathan after that? There would be no reason for him to return to knitting club.

“You will. Look, you’re already halfway there.” He leaned forward. “Did you want to add some fringe? It’s easy.
