CHAPTER SIX

The Party

“Oh, you want to know about David and Luke, the two shepherd boys?” Joey smiled as he asked Josh.

“This is their story about following the star to see baby Jesus.

“Once they roused themselves from their dazed state of mind and checked their sheep, they looked over to my camp. They didn’t see me and so became frightened for my welfare. They teased me later that they thought I had fallen down with my sheep and died of fright! So they ran to where my sheep were all huddled happily sleeping. They didn’t see me there and realized that I had taken off to see the baby.

“‘Joey left without us!’ David decided once he saw my empty blankets. ‘C’mon Luke. Let’s catch up.’

“As they were walking through the grove of fig trees, and before they got to the pond, David grabbed Luke’s sleeve and said, ‘Wait, Luke! He might be only a baby, but He’s our King. This is our Savior. We can’t just show up without a gift!’

“‘Yeah, that wouldn’t be good,’ Luke agreed and stopped. He scratched his chin while he considered what they could possibly give a king.

“‘What’s wrong with that?’ David asked. ‘You can use it for everything. It would come in handy for a new mom.’

“‘Okay, I guess it’s better than nothing,’ Luke grudgingly agreed, ‘but let’s get our flutes, too. The least we can do is play some music for Him.’

“It was David’s turn to be doubtful. He wasn’t sure that was such a great idea. ‘We’re not the best musicians around, Luke. We think we’re good, but we’ve never played for anyone else. I don’t want to scare Him or make Him cry.’

“But Luke was sure of his plan. ‘We’re not good. We’re great!’ he told David as he clapped him on the back with encouragement. ‘Let’s go back to camp and get the flutes and fat.’

“Running like the wind they went back the way they came. The sheep were still sleeping soundly as the boys rooted around their back packs for the sheep fat and flutes. As an afterthought, David muttered, ‘I wish we didn’t eat all the honey. That would have been a good gift, too.’

“The honey was long gone in our stomachs so the boys had to be content with the fat and their music. Grabbing the pouch of fat and their flutes, the boys made their way toward the path where the light was shining.

“When David and Luke arrived at
