AFTER THE CHECKUP, MARIUS’ EYES DROPPED CLOSED, and me and Dr. Garcia left the room so he and the babies could get some rest.

“He says he walked here?” Dr. Garcia said as we closed the bedroom door.

“I think he walked the last leg, took a train part of the way, maybe a bus. He came from Northwest Springs, so there’s no way he could’ve walked all the way.”

“And he ended up in your barn?”

“I guess he couldn’t make it all the way to The Welcome Center, even though he said it would’ve been no use because he was told there weren’t any rooms available.”

Mr. Jones walked over, biting his lip and shaking his head. “If I knew … his phone cut out … I would’ve taken him in at my house.”

“I think he went into labor before anyone could take him in,” I said, running my hand through my hair.

“And you said they artificially inseminated him against his will?”

I let out a heavy sigh. “Yeah.”

“We have to send a team out there. I thought things were under control. It sounds like it’s gotten worse.” Mr. Jones’ shoulders dropped, and he scrubbed his palm over his face.

“I think they just took all the bad stuff underground, or maybe the people in charge just turned a blind eye.”

“Maybe when he feels up to it, he can give us some more details.”

“Thanks for everything, Mr. Jones.”
