August 31, 6:00 PM.
Yoshikawa Kikyou sighed, now alone in the room.
Accelerator coming here at the last moment was nothing short of a miraculous stroke of luck. If he hadn’t, she really wouldn’t have been able to do anything, and Academy City would have been destroyed.
Now that he was going looking for Last Order, Yoshikawa’s job was to catch Amai and make him explain the virus code, but she lingered here—making sense of the code herself seemed the simpler option when compared to getting herself involved in a running fight, which she’d never done before.
Nevertheless…
Weeding out every last bit of the virus code from the enormous personality data when she didn’t even know how much of it existed was an arduous task in and of itself. She couldn’t mess up and delete needed code, either. If she got rid of memory-related programming, Last Order would simply lose some memories, but if she damaged the code governing her autonomic nervous system, the girl would die.
She sighed again.
She looked up from the data sheet. Readjusting Last Order’s body was no simple task, despite her easy reply to Accelerator previously. It was less of an issue of technical skill and more one of her current position.
The laboratory had only frozen the experiment, not terminated it entirely. That meant they had to make sure the experiment could be restarted at any time. Of course, they could never allow Last Order, the core of controlling all the Sisters, to run amok because of a single researcher’s own scheming. If she took independent action, she would doubtlessly be on the receiving end of the responsibility.
Yoshikawa was just soft. She was not a kind person.
For example, when that experiment was on the brink of ending, when just short of ten thousand Sisters conspired to control the wind-generating propellers in Academy City to hamper Accelerator’s attack, she could have stopped them by sending a halt signal through the Misaka Network with Last Order, but she didn’t.
The fact that she didn’t, however, was not out of any sort of kindness because she didn’t want them to die. It was only because she was too soft to risk causing irreparable damage to the whole experiment by interfering with the Sisters during their work.
“Still, though…”
Yoshikawa Kikyou made up her mind.
Accelerator was trying so hard to save someone that he had thrown aside his own identity. That reality was probably enough to drive a heavy shock into his heart. It was a pretty simple, fundamental point that he could help people with his power—but he had given up. He purposely deprecated himself, saying that he couldn’t do anything but kill, to give himself a way out of his own life, in which he would never be saved.
If Accelerator, in that condition, were to realize that he was able to protect someone with his own hands…
...He would definitely have regrets.
About what those people who had fallen before him meant to him.
About why he didn’t lend a hand more quickly.
However, he still set his mind on facing that reality so that he could save just one girl.
