FEANNAG VILLAGE HALL
DECEMBER 2003
Christmas Eve had arrived; weâd been working hard to get everything ready for our Christmas giveaway. This morning weâd woken to a freezing cold foggy morning with a thick frost on the ground. Ellie had been beside herself with excitement.
Iâd smiled as Iâd heard her excited chatter while weâd all been shovelling a hot breakfast into our mouths this morning. Fuelling ourselves what we knew was going to be a busy day.
Some of us had already done the rounds of the hospital with Rea. Delivering presents and singing Christmas carols with the staff. Weâd all cringed at the noise that had come out of Cairo, and it was noise. There was no way what came out of his mouth could be called singing.
Grinning at the memory of the look on Cairoâs face when Navy had slapped a hand over his mouth and told him, âBrother, you may be pretty to look at, but you canât sing for shâ¦. I mean ship. Seriously, brother, donât give up the day job.â
Their messing around had set the whole ward, including the nurses, patients, doctors and some parents, off laughing. Weâd made Cairo mime carols for the rest of the walk around the hospital.
I donât think he minded. He seemed quite happy sucking on the lollipop that one of the nurses had given him to make up for his mean friends. Heâd soaked the attention right up.
After a quick lunch weâd all gathered in the hall and had set up a Santaâs grotto that Sam had hurriedly made when Iâd first brought up this idea. The girls were busy decorating it with greenery and ribbon. The rest of us had moved the tables and chairs around the hall as instructed by Mum and Aunt Maggie. Sam and Alec were helping set up a projector for us to watch the movie.
Weâd made up fresh bags of popcorn and small bags of sweets to give out to each child as they came in so that they had something to munch on during the movie. Weâd set this up at the table near the entrance of the hall. Once they had their treats, they could go ahead and find a place to sit on the matts weâd brought from the gym so that they werenât sitting on the cold floor.
It wasnât two oâclock yet and the queue of excited children could be heard coming from outside.
I did a quick look around the room and saw that we were ready; the grotto was decorated, and the matts were down. Alec and Sam were at the projector, ready to press play once the kids were all settled. Bella, Bren, and Carly were dressed as elves, ready to help when Father Christmas arrived and help hand out gifts. Beau had set up a camera on a tripod and was offering photos with Father Christmas for a donation that he was going to give to the charity fund for the village.
Brice and Booker were at the door
