From afar, Maddox, the wolf, stared at Will, then at Thomas. He whined as he pinned his ears back. He looked down at the ground, picked up another torn piece of Madisonâs dress, and held it in between his drooly teeth. He stepped closer. Thomas raced down the dirt pathway, and Will watched his brother. The dog whined again. A trapped and distant memory hit the wolf as he watched the two brothers.
A terrible smell of burned icing lurked around the old cabin. Eighteen-year-old Matt walked around the corner, waved his hand over his nose, and barked, âSmells like shit in here.â
Sixteen-year-old Will pulled the cake off the kitchen fire, partially charred from the flames. Smoke rose, filling the dingy cabin. Taking the nearest hand towel, he batted the smoke away, and coughed.
Matt then glanced over to the right, aiming his gaze at their Pa, passed out in the hall. Vomit ringed around his mouth. Booze soaked into the rotting floorboards.
âFor fuckâs sake, what the hell is goinâ on?â Matt growled at Will, âWhatcha tryna do, burn the goddamn house down, Willy-Woo?â
âShut up,â Will snapped. âI donât see you liftinâ a finger âround here. Iâm always doinâ everything.â
âOh boo-hoo, Willy-Woo.â Matt rolled his eyes. âYou just need to get laid nâ pop that virgin cherry. Then, maybe youâll stop being such a crabby ass.â
âRight, I can see where your tiny-tim has gotten you. Youâre a catch, for sure. N' you always say that nasty F-word, which is so unnecessary.â
âTake that fuckinâ back!â Matt growled, slamming his bottle down onto the counter. Will and Matt grabbed each other by the shirts and shot a glare.
"No!"
Their Pa rolled and grunted. âMattie and Willy, For gosh sakes, stop it!â He gagged, then hurled on the floor. Shutting his eyes, he slurred, âIâm so tired of you both.â
âYour turn.â Will smirked.
âFuck you,â Matt said. He swigged the booze, then wiped his mouth with his wrist. âAt least my nickname ainât named after a dick.â
âWell yours is girlie.â
âGot that right. Fuck my life.â Matt rolled his blue eyes. He stepped closer toward Will, pointed at the cake, and laughed. âWhat the hell is wrong with that thing? You ainât supposed to put that in before baking.â
âWhat?â
Both boys looked down. The pink candle melted into the cake, pooling into a circle.
âDude, it looks like a fuckinâ boob.â Matt lifted his fist to his mouth, then burst into a laugh. âNo wonder why you choke your chicken just beforeââ
Will reached to slap Matt. âShut up!â
Matt backed away, and blocked Willâs arm, holding his hand away from him. âDonât fuckinâ touch me with that hand! But, now, I know what youâre thinkinâ aboutâ¦.Lilianna.â
Will shrieked with blushed cheeks. âEw. No!â
Thomas giggled as he jumped up and down in his seat. He clapped. âWill likes a girl! Will likes a girl!â
âYeah, Thomas!â Matt laughed as he wrapped his arms around his little brother. They both danced around the table and clanged pots together. âWill likes Lilianna. Will wants to kiss Lilianna.
