Sixteen

The meeting place wasn’t as big as I expected. I guess years of watching movies and shows kind of spoiled me. This meeting place was about the size of a small dance hall. A very small dance hall. But just like in the movies there were some chairs in the middle, all arranged in a circle.

There was a young man there in a priest’s uniform putting down bibles on the chairs.

“This is Father-in-training Skyler,” Father Antonio explained.

Skyler’s face lit up in a smile as he greeted us. He had short blond hair and a gentle caring demeanor about him.

After the introductions, Father Antonio decided to leave us to our own devices.

“I don’t have much time to talk. My group starts in half an hour,” Skyler explained. He continued to place bibles on the chairs, arranging them neatly so they would create a perfect circle, just like the chairs they were placed on. I wondered if this young priest had OCD but decided to keep that observation to myself.

“And what kind of group is that going to be?” Jack asked, notebook in hand and pen at the ready. Scott looked much the same, except his notebook was bigger.

“This one is a prayer group but I’m sure you’re more interested in the group Jennifer was a part of, am I right?”

Jack nodded curtly. “Right on the money you are, Father.”

“Jennifer was part of our Emotional Support group. We had a meeting every Saturday.”

“Emotional support? Why did a successful real estate agent need that?” I asked.

“That’s between her and God, I’m afraid. While not a confessional, our groups are still private and I wouldn’t feel right sharing that kind of information with anyone. You understand, don’t you?”

“She’s dead. I don’t think she’ll mind if you share what she was going through if it might provide a clue to who killed her,” Scott spoke for the first time since meeting Father Skyler. It was clear he didn’t like the fellow.

Father Skyler smiled that reassuring smile of his. “Perhaps, but I still wouldn’t feel right sharing that information.”

“I think I’ll have to insist,” Jack said. “This is a criminal matter and if you’re withholding vital information we might have to take you in for questioning.”

Skyler remained calm. He didn’t show any shock or fear like I had expected him to.

“You do what you must, but laws of men do not rule me.”

That sounded ominous.

“We’ll be back,” Jack said. “Maybe with a warrant.”

Scott, Jack and I made our way out of Father Skyler’s meeting place.

“What was that about?” I asked them. “He’s definitely hiding something.”

“Or he takes his job very seriously,” Scott offered.

I was surprised that he would be the one to make that observation.

Jack looked thoughtful. He was looking at an old photo on the wall. “I think I’ll see if Father Antonio is more cooperative.”

“I may be able to help with that,” I whispered once I got close to him.

He looked at me strangely. “What are you talking about?”

“She has a spell that turns
