Life Experience: A Mother in Need, by Dawn

It’s a situation no mother ever wants to have to face. The time that you’re forced to take a backseat and let your daughter take the wheel. The time you have no choice but to lean on her, and, in the worst of times, lean hard.

We always want to be strong and handle our trauma and pain ourselves so as not to burden those we love, but sometimes life gives you more than you can handle on your own.

This was the case for me when Cher was in her later teen years and I began to have very acute bouts of a disease called Ulcerative Colitis. I won’t darken your day with the gory details, but suffice it to say that a flare up meant, regardless of where we were or what we were doing, if I had to go?

I had to go.

It was painful. It was humiliating. It made me feel weak and terrible. But through it all, Cher was there. My little rock of support and a fountain of excellent excuses to manage my sudden disappearances.

Without me ever asking, if we were at a party and I was gone too long, she was armed and ready.

“Oh, my mom. She’s a fancy soap aficionado. Probably in there pawing through all of the different scents, I bet she’s in heaven right now!”

Or, “Sorry, my mom had to step away for an important call. She said she’d be back as soon as she can.”

This disease brought other fun treats along with it, as well. There were days that I would get dressed up only to look in the mirror and find that my stomach was so bloated, I looked five months pregnant. How do I know that this wasn’t just me being paranoid? Because one time we were shopping and a “helpful stranger” stopped and asked how far along I was.

But there was Cher again, and instead of laughing at what might’ve seemed funny from the outside looking in, she instantly tried to comfort me, insisting it must have just been the way I was standing. She even went through a three-minute demo of slouching and standing and slumping and straightening and telling me how posture could make anyone look like they have a bun in the oven, even her with her tiny frame!

She didn’t take a breath before continuing on to tell me how proud I should be that people still thought I looked young enough to be pregnant.

But Cher was more than just my confidence booster. She was also always the one who kept track of my doctor appointments and made sure I got where I needed to go.

During my colonoscopies they would have to put me under anesthesia and when I would come out of it, I would always have to pee. Instead of letting the nurse help, Cher always stepped up, knowing I was more comfortable with her.
