Tim and Betsy Masterson pulled into the parking lot of the bus station and Kiku and Alex got out. Kiku shook Betsy’s hand through the truck’s passenger-side window.

“I can’t thank you enough for your kindness.”

Tim leaned forward in the driver’s seat and smiled. “No need to thank us. Glad to help.”

Betsy grabbed hold of Kiku’s wrist. “Mimi, would you drop us a note letting us know you two are okay?”

“I will. Once we’re safe.”

“We’ll be praying for you,” Tim said.

Betsy reached into her pocket and pulled out an envelope. “It’s not much, but it’ll be enough to get you two to Chicago and a little extra.”

Kiku took the envelope but didn’t open it. “Thank you. Again. Do you mind if I pray with you?”

Tim and Betsy exchanged a surprised look, but they both nodded.

Kiku grabbed Alex’s hand and leaned into the cab. “Dear Lord, thank You for Tim and Betsy and the fact that they are doers of Your word. The world needs more people willing to help strangers and those in need. Bless them and their home. In the name of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.”

Betsy’s eyes glistened, and she squeezed Tim’s hand. “God bless you, Mimi and Hwan.”

“Our address is on the other side of that envelope,” Tim said. “You don’t have to write anything long . . . we just want to know you’re safe.”

“I will write.” Kiku stepped away from the truck. She shot a sharp look at Alex, who was standing there looking bored to death.

“Thanks,” Alex said reluctantly. He gave an awkward wave as the truck pulled away. “Are we going now, Mimi?”

When the truck was out of sight, Kiku smacked Alex in the back of the head.

“It was a joke!” Alex rubbed his crew cut and laughed.

“You could have been more polite. Those people opened their home to us.”

“I thanked them like twenty times this morning. Thank you for letting me sleep over. Thank you for breakfast. Thank you for the ride. Thank you—”

“Enough. You made your point.” Kiku took a map of the city from a display of tourist brochures and flyers and started walking away from the bus station.

“Aren’t we taking the bus?”

“No. Too obvious. Besides, I am not arriving in Chicago by bus. I have a reputation to uphold.” She opened Betsy’s envelope and counted the cash.

“How much did they give you?” Alex asked.

“Two hundred dollars. It was a kind gesture, but it is not enough.”

“That was good acting, praying with them. They ate it up.”

“I was not acting.” Kiku stuffed the envelope in her pocket. “The world needs more people like them.” She unfolded the city map and studied it for a moment.

“But . . .” Alex made a face. “You don’t believe in all that praying stuff, do you?”

“I do. Even the devil believes in God. He does not follow Him, but he knows God is real. Belief and obedience are two very different things. Now, would you please do me a favor? Shut up.” She tossed the map into a trash can.
